BBQ Portobello Steak Mushroom

Portobello’s are the large version of a cremini mushroom.

Avoid saturated fats from animal proteins by enjoying this Portobello Steak as a great substitution. Bring on the tasty, low calorie and healthier alternative.

You can also BBQ, pan fry or bake them. Taking only only 20 minutes, then you will be eating.

Serve with your favourite carbohydrate, like sweet potatoes, air fries, rice or even my dairy free, creamy garlic mashed potato recipe and with an option of my easy gravy recipe.

 

This recipe is all Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegan and Vegetarian.

Equipment

  • STOVE TOP with grilling pan or BBQ
  • 1 small mixing bowl
  • Garlic Press
  • Tbsp
  • tsp
  • 1/4 tsp
  • 1 Large lasagna pan
  • Saran Wrap
  • Whisk
  • Tongs
  • Marinating Brush

Ingredients
  

  • 3 large Portobello mushrooms Stems removed. Rinse and dry with paper towel
  • 2 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
  • 3 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 tbsp Tamari low sodium and gluten free soy sauce Use 1 Tbsp first and taste test the saltiness.
  • 2 Garlic Cloves crushed
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1/3 tsp Smoked Paprika
  • 1/3 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper grounded
  • pinch Cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil for grilling the pan

Optional Sauces instead to make it easy

  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce of choice gluten free

Instructions
 

  • Each mushroom remove the stems. Wash them, and then dry them with a paper towel. Place them all in a large lasagna dish.
  • In a small mixing bowl mix in all the liquid ingredients Balsamic vinegar, Olive Oil, and Tamari. Then add in all other spices of onion, paprika, cumin, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Then add in the crushed Garlic and whisk well together. Brush this mix over tops of each mushroom top and bottom. Flip back over so the lid is facing up. Cover dish with plastic wrap and let sit on the counter for 30min - 1 hour.
  • Alternative to the ingredients, simply use your favourite BBQ Sauce and brush on all sides generously. Let sit for 30 minutes.
  • Heat BBQ or grilling pan on stove at medium heat. If using the pan, use the additional 2 tbsp of Olive oil. Turn down the heat to medium low, then add the mushrooms top side down so you make some nice grill marks. Depending on their size, cook approximately 3 - 5 minutes per side. I find the smaller only 3 minutes per side, and large at 5 minutes per side. Flip them over using tongs,
  • Remove from heat and keep covered until ready to serve.
